The Museum's founders were distinctly interested in the art of their own time, and it is with works made after 1900 that the galleries are mostly filled.

Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Norton's original gifts and bequests, and to donations and purchases since 1953, the collection contains signature works—paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints—by modern masters such as Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Gino Severini, Robert Delaunay, Giorgio de Chirico, Constantin Brancusi, Joan Miró, Paul Klee, Max Beckmann, Chaim Soutine and Marc Chagall.
