Collecting the Impressionists:
Masterpieces from the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute
January 20 through March 11, 2007
Twelve masterpieces include portraits by Pierre-Auguste Renoir,
landscapes by Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, a still life by Edouard
Manet, and a classic ballet scene by Edgar Degas.
They were carefully selected to reveal the preferences of Sterling and
Francine Clark for pictures suffused with an unmistakably French
joie-de-vivre: sunny landscapes, portraits of beautiful young women,
charming genre scenes, and contemplative still lifes. This exhibition
celebrates the 50th anniversary of the magnificent bequest to the museum
that bears their name.
This exhibition at the Norton Museum of Art is
made possible in part through the generosity of Harold and Anne
Berkley Smith, the Sydelle and Arthur I. Meyer Endowment, the
Gioconda and Joseph King Endowment, the State of Florida, Department
of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council, and
the National Endowment for the Arts.
