An Amazing Art: Contemporary Labyrinths by Adrian Fisher
1/20/1997 - 3/9/1997

An Amazing Art: Contemporary Labyrinths by Adrian Fisher, a unique exhibition of contemporary mazes, will be on display January 20 through March 9, 1997 at the Norton Museum of Art. Mr. Fisher will be at the Museum, putting the finishing touches on his mazes, January 20 through January 26. Adrian Fisher has designed conventional hedge mazes in parks and for country houses in England, Europe, America and Japan, but he has become almost better known for his work in a more modern idiom. The excitement is not limited to spaces inside the Museum. Fascinating outdoor mazes in the show will include the daring rope maze; the elegant turf maze, inspired by ancient English and Celtic historical examples; and the fabulous Minotaur maze created out of colored bricks, inspired by a Roman mosaic maze in Switzerland, and permanently installed in the Museum's new East Garden. The exhibition will also include information and photographs of historical and contemporary mazes. The maze in one form or another has long been a symbol of man's struggle against eternal forces and has been popular in many cultures, from the ancient Greeks, Romans and Celts, through the great European cultures of the Renaissance and the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today, the maze or labyrinth is as popular as ever, and is certain to attract children and adults from around the world.
