  Andreas Feininger
8/9/2003 - 10/24/2003

The son of one of the master instructors at the Bauhaus, Andreas Feininger trained and worked as an architect in Germany before moving to Stockholm, where he turned to photography to make a living. Shortly after immigrating to New York in 1939, he became a staff photographer for Life Magazine, where he worked for twenty years. The 346 picture stories he published there helped to define him as one of the premier photojournalists of the 20th century. Regardless of whether his subject was taken from the natural or manmade world, Feininger's photographs focus on structure, both of his subject and of the pictorial composition. He often relied on the technique of the close-up or on a telephoto lens, using the camera to enable viewers to discover the world surrounding them and come to a deeper understanding of how it functions structurally.

Following Feininger's death in 1999, his widow Wysse donated 33 photographs to the Norton Museum; the exhibition highlights this gift of photographs and demonstrates the breadth of the photographer's career from the early 1930s until 1980.
