Attention, quilters!
The Palm Beach Post is HAVING A BLOCK PARTY (A quilting block party, that is.)
Are you a quilter? Take our quilting block challenge! In conjunction with the summer quilt exhibition0s at the Norton
Museum of Art -- both honoring the art of quilts -- we want to create a king-size, South Florida-themed quilt made from
South Florida residents' handiwork.
Here's where you come in: Create a 12.5 inch, unfinished quilt block, featuring a South Florida theme. Use your
imagination!
Please create your block with 100 percent cotton fabrics, prewashed and pressed. (Embellishments accepted.)
Thirty blocks will be chosen by a panel of judges, and those blocks will be made into a final quilt, by the Palm Beach
Quilt Guild, to be displayed at the Norton Museum of Art. Prizes will be awarded to the creators of the 30 chosen quilt
blocks. Blocks cannot be returned.
The deadline to receive the blocks is June 30th.
Please securely attach the form below to the back of your block.
Please mail the blocks or deliver them to Community Relations Department, The Palm Beach Post, 2751 S. Dixie Highway,
West Palm Beach, FL 33405.
Any questions, please contact Janie Fogt at 561-820-4262 or

Art of the Needle: Masterpiece Quilts from the Shelburne Museum June 17–September 10, 2006
Art of the Needle features 40 of the finest examples of nineteenth-century textile art, and one very rare eighteenth-century quilt, drawn from the Shelburne Museum’s world-renowned permanent collection of over 400 American quilts. The Shelburne was the first museum to exhibit quilts as works of art and artifacts, in 1952. The quilts in this exhibition are grouped into eight principal construction or design themes: album, Amish, appliqué, chintz appliqué, pieced, Victorian (crazy and log cabin), white work, and whole cloth. Each category highlights a particular quilting method or design style. Taken together they embody an extraordinary range of artistic impulses—from the exacting precision of stitching in white work quilts to the exhilarating color and chaos of crazy quilts. Art of the Needle will resonate with history enthusiasts appreciating quilts as records of a time and a place, and art lovers who will be impressed with the quilts’ often dramatic visual qualities.
Art of the Needle: Masterpiece Quilts from the Shelburne Museum has been organized by the Shelburne Museum, Vermont. Local funding is provided by the R.H. Norton Trust and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Local media support provided by The Palm Beach Post.
