BEFORE THE CAMERA:
Remaking Reality and the
Make-believe
October 14, 2006 through January 7, 2007
Comprising works from local and national collections, this exhibition looks at the distinction between "taking" and
"making" photographs. Historically, photographers spoke about "taking" pictures, while artists referred to "making" an
artwork. Over the past few decades these disparate notions of creativity have merged, with countless artists and/or
photographers making the scene, subject or tableau to be photographed before the camera.
Organized by the Norton Museum of Art.
This exhibition is made possible in part through the generosity of the Michael M. Rea Endowment and the Photography
Committee of the Norton Museum of Art.
Media support provided by The Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald.
