Beverly Semmes: All Dressed Up
4/27/1996 - 7/7/1996

Beverly Semmes is an artist who merges a formal investigation of color, pattern, and texture with social commentary. Her fabric sculptures simulate and exaggerate such articles of attire as house dresses, ball gowns, and robes.

By exaggerating the forms of clothing, Semmes draws attention to the dehumanizing attributes of cultural stereotypes. Her gigantic dresses hang on gallery walls, spilling across the floor in undulating rolls of fabric.

The monumental scale of these works has appealing absurdity. By creating a psychological and metaphoric landscape, the viewer can explore masks of identity and modes of cultural and personal expression. The exhibition will include three Semmes sculptures and six color prints.
