Birdspace: A Post-Audubon Artists' Aviary
5/29/2004 - 8/15/2004

Birds have eternally fascinated human beings: so long as art has been made, the imagery of birds has been popular. This remarkable exhibition demonstrates that their appeal has never been stronger, bringing together recent works by more than 50 artists for whom birds have significance whether personal or universal. For some artists, birds are the touchstone of physical nature while others regard them more mystically as symbols of transience and mortality. Certain artists identify so personally with birds that the representation of them becomes a vehicle for exploring issues of autobiography; still others take nothing but delight from birds and use them as a point of departure for toying or gaming with the viewer's perceptions. Included are works by Jacqueline Bishop, Ann Craven, Wim Delvoye, Walton Ford, Roni Horn, Hunt Slonem, Monica Zeringue and many more. Birdspace: A Post-Audubon Artists' Aviary was organized by the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans.
