A Brush with Nature: The Gere Collection of Landscape Oil Sketches
10/11/2003 - 1/4/2004

The Gere Collection from the National Gallery, London, is one of the best collections of its type ever assembled. On display will be 66 oil paintings, relatively small in scale, by European artists of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries such as Salvator Rosa, J.-B.-C. Corot, Frederic Lord Leighton and Edgar Degas. Pictures such as these were painted outdoors, mostly in Italy, as painters attempted to capture the transitory effects of light: the subtlety of sunset over the Isle of Capri, the dazzling shimmer of the waterfalls at Tivoli, or the dramatic patterns of brilliant sunlight and deep shadow in the Roman ruins at high noon. Seldom regarded by their creators as finished works of art, these remarkable transcriptions of nature demonstrate the importance of plein aire painting that resulted in Impressionism. Organized by the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, Tennessee.
