Crosscurrents at Century's End: Selections from the Neuberger Berman Art Collection
10/18/2003 - 12/28/2003

Roy Neuberger -- founder of the investment and wealth management firm, Neuberger Berman -- is one of the legendary collectors of 20th-century American art. Living in Paris, in the 1920s, he "resolved to go back to America, to make a fortune and to buy the work of unknown living artists." And he did just that, starting in 1938 with the purchase of two paintings by Peter Hurd (step-brother of artist Andrew Wyeth). From then his passion and his eye led him from one undiscovered talent to the next. Neuberger never sold his earlier acquisitions: instead he donated hundreds of paintings to museums including the one that bears his name at the State University of New York at Purchase. In 1990, Neuberger Berman -- in the spirit of its founder -- used company funds to establish its own collection of works by emerging artists and from these the present exhibition of about 60 examples has been selected: displayed are works by Michael Bevilacqua, Willie Cole, Karin Davie, Inka Essenhigh, Vik Muniz, Thomas Struth, and many others.

This exhibition is sponsored by Neuberger Berman.

Additional support was provided by the Milton and Sheila Fine Endowment for Contemporary Art.
