Families
6/22/2001 - 8/26/2001

Since 1963 Uwe Ommer has made his home in Paris, where he is a well-known fashion and advertising photographer. In 1996 Ommer left Paris to begin a four-year, 156,000-mile odyssey through 130 countries. The photographer took his portable studio and Rolleiflex camera across five continents, wherever an automobile could travel, to create a panoramic record of the family. The completed project debuted at Fotokina (an annual photography fair in Cologne, Germany) as 1000 Families. The 6-foot-high photographs, laminated on wood, were displayed out-of-doors, along a mile long path that included a bridge span. About 150 of these photographs will be exhibited at the Norton Museum of Art this summer.

The families represented in this exhibition talked with the photographer about their lives and hopes for the future, and the wall texts in the exhibition will feature their commentaries. A 576-page, illustrated, soft-cover catalogue of the exhibition, which contains essays by Uwe Ommer and colorful commentary on each of the families will be available in the Museum Store

In addition, a variety of summer family programs and tours will explore Ommer's photography and the rich cultural diversity of our South Florida communities. This exhibition is organized by the Norton Museum of Art.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a photograph of their family, (6" x 4" or smaller), to place on our Family Atlas Wall. The photograph will be located on or near the country where their family originated. Photographs will remain on view throughout the run of the exhibition and will not be returned to the owner. And don't forget to stop by the Museum for the regularly scheduled Sunday's at the Norton programs, which are free with paid Museum admission.
