A Golden Age: Old Master Prints from the Norton Museum of Art
1/20/1997 - 3/30/1997

After an extensive tour of Florida, A Golden Age: Old Master Prints from the Norton Museum of Art will return home for the Museum's opening on January 20, 1997. On display through March 30, this portion of the Norton's permanent collection is an exceptional representation of the beautiful art of print making. The earliest prints in this exhibition are woodcuts and engravings from the 1480s and 1490s.

The exhibition includes fine examples by the acknowledged master of the early sixteenth century, Albrecht Durer; a selection of brilliant works by Rembrandt; examples by the renowned painter and printmaker Peter Breughel, including Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, 1553, which has never before been seen at the Norton; prints by Jacques Callot, works by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, the highly influential Italian presursor of the romantic style, whose brooding and atmospheric The Pier with Chains, 1749, is one of the great icons of the eighteenth century and many more fine examples of Old Masters works.
