Marsden Hartley: American Modern
12/11/1999 - 2/27/2000

MARSDEN HARTLEY (1877-1943) is a highly revered modern artist, and his reputation continues to rise among scholars, museums and the general public. His work is included in every great collection of American twentieth-century art, and he has been influential to artists of his time as well as artists working today. This exhibition including 37 paintings and 17 works on paper, drawn from the collections of the Weisman Museum in Minneapolis, demonstrates Hartley's enormous importance in America, and the different phases of his production. Hartley's life and his art were never static, and he responded to the drastic political, cultural and artistic changes that took place over the span of his career. He created a particular type of early Modernism that drew on Impressionism and Fauvism. However, his works remained distinctly American, and indeed he was one of a small group of artists working in the early years of the century who pioneered American Moderism. Hartley is equally well known for his groundbreaking abstract works, and his lyrical American landscapes. The exhibition presents superb examples of Hartley's work from each period of his output: early post-Impressionist Maine mountain scenes; pre-WWI abstractions made in Paris and Berlin; Provincetown landscapes and abstracts; New Mexican landscapes; still lifes from the 1920s and 1930s; Bavarian mountain pastels; 1930s portraits and late Maine landscapes. Marsden Hartley: American Modern is organized by the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. This exhibition is generously underwritten in part through the corporate sponsorship of Wilmington Trust.
