Focus On: Florence Henri
7/24/2004 - 11/14/2004

With this installation, the Norton launches an ongoing series of photographic exhibitions that highlight the Museum's permanent collection. This installation focuses on the work of Florence Henri. Born in New York City in 1893, Henri first studied music, then painting and photography, in Germany and Paris. Following a year at the Bauhaus in Germany in 1927–28, she moved to Paris, where she set up a studio for portrait, fashion and advertising photography. Her work was included in seminal exhibitions and publications of the late 1920s and early 1930s, contributing to the international language of photographic experimentation and abstraction referred to as the New Vision in Europe. The Norton's holdings (40 in total) demonstrate Henri's mastery of portraiture and still life, incorporating close-ups, reflections and montage in her repertory of techniques. Organized by the Norton Museum of Art.
