Hollywood Glamour Photography: Ruth Harriet Louise at MGM
11/3/2003 - 1/18/2004

When Ruth Harriet Louise joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925, just 22 years of age, she was the only woman working as a portrait photographer for the Hollywood studios. In a career that lasted only five years, she photographed all the stars, contract players, and many of the hopefuls who passed through the studio's front gates: Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, and many others. Curated by Robert Dance and Bruce Robertson, this exhibition of 80 vintage prints provides insight into the phenomenon of fan culture during the early years of Hollywood, demonstrating how the movies and publicity machine supported by these photographs shaped the basic notions of stardom, glamour, and fashion in the 1920s and how they continue to affect such notions today. Organized by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California.

Local presentation has been generously underwritten by Wachovia Wealth Management.

This exhibition was made possible by the generous support of Dana and Albert R. Broccoli Charitable Foundation, Kathleen Barrows, and Santa Barbara Museum of Art PhotoFutures.

Additional support has been provided by the Sydelle and Arthur I. Meyer Endowment Fund.

Media support has been provided by the Palm Beach Daily News and WXEL 90.7 FM.
