The Arrested Image: Nineteenth Century Photography
2/5/2000 - 4/2/2000

From the very invention of the first mechanical photographic processes in the late 1830s, photography has existed in something of a contested ideological space. The dispute over who in fact was the true inventor of photography has served as a model for countless subsequent debates over issues ranging from the role of photography as a reproductive technique, whether photography was a true art form, and if so, what was its proper aesthetic? While often drawing upon the examples provided by painting, drawing and printmaking, the first photographers invented a visual language all their own that challenged all previous conventions of image-making.

The Arrested Image: Nineteenth Century Photography examines this contested space via an ensemble of some 40 images organized from the Norton Museum's permanent collection, as well as key loans from important local collections; these photographs illustrate the exhilarating, magnificent, and oftentimes pioneering use of the medium. Included in the exhibition will be significant works by the artists who were instrumental in advancing photography as an art form such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Clarence White, Nadar, Roger Fenton, and Edward Steichen. Also included will be examples of cartes-de-vistes or formal visiting cards popular in the 19th century, as well as a variety of fascinating historic work by photographers who recorded the people and places of a much wilder and less developed Florida. In addition, there will be examples of the various processes available to the artists of the time, such as daguerreotypes, photogravures and albumen prints, as well as gelatin silver prints.

This exhibition was conceived as a companion exhibition to Art in the Age of Queen Victoria:Treasures from the Royal Academy of Arts. Organized by the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida.
