JFK and Art
2/6/2004 - 5/2/2004

This exhibition features the various and sometimes complicated responses of American and European artists to John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th president of the United States, whose administration has been romanticized as a second Camelot. Artists younger than Kennedy--younger even than Mrs. Kennedy--were instrumental and highly influential in their almost immediate transformation of the family and the facts of their lives into the stuff of modern mythology. Works of art featured in the exhibition include references to people (Nikita Khrushchev, Fidel Castro, Marilyn Monroe) and events (Kennedy in Berlin, the Cuban missile Crisis, the assassination in Dallas) that were forever stamped on the consciousness of a global audience--whether enthralled or horrified--through both print and electronic media. Many of the artists themselves have now passed into history and their names constitute a veritable "Who's Who?" of American art in the 1960s: Hans Hoffmann, Marisol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol, and Elaine de Kooning. Organized by the Bruce Museum of Arts and Sciences, Greenwich, Connecticut in collaboration with the Norton Museum of Art. Sponsored in part by the Joseph and Gioconda King Exhibition Endowment, the Priscilla and John Richman Endowment for American Art, and the Liman Foundation.

Media support has been provided by WPTV News Channel 5 and The Palm Beach Post.
