Alex Katz: Under the Stars, American Landscapes, 1951-1995
3/15/1997 - 5/4/1997

Although Katz is best known for his portraits, these large-scale works demonstrate the wide range of the artist's favorite landscape subject matter, from woodland and beach scenes in Maine where the artist spends his summers, to the urban "landscapes" of New York City. Based directly on nature and dating back as early as the 1950's, these unique works reveal much about Katz's growth and development as an artist. Early paintings demonstrate his initial desire to capture the physical energy of nature by working with a spontaneity and expansiveness inspired by Pollack, while works of the 1960's and 1970's reflect Katz's eventual rejection of the 'highly mannered' gestural approach of Abstract Expressionism, in favor of his own interests in rejuvenating the classical tradition of realist painting, and finally, his moves toward a more highly developed sense of abstraction.
