American Modernism from the Stieglitz Group
11/21/1999 - 1/30/2000

DURING the first decades of the 20th century, photographer Alfred Stieglitz was one of the most important advocates of modern art in the United States. In addition to his own artistic innovations, Stieglitz's famous 291 Gallery in New York helped launch the careers of such seminal American modernists as Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Arthur G. Dove, and Georgia O'Keeffe, who the photographer would eventually marry. Assembled largely from the Norton Museum of Art's own holdings, American Modernism from the Stieglitz Group will run concurrently with the larger Marsden Hartley: American Modern exhibition, offering a glimpse of one of the most dynamic and exciting artistic milieus this country has ever produced. This exhibition is organized by the Norton Museum of Art
