More Than Works of Art: The Exhibition That JA BASE Built
5/25/2001 - 7/18/2001

The Norton Museum of Art opened a new exhibition entitled More Than Works of Art: The Exhibition That JA BASE Built on May 25, 2001. This exhibition features 16 self-portrait collages, which were completed by 16 ninth grade students from William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens. The object of this collaboration between the Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches Building Achievement through Sports and Entertainment project, William T. Dwyer High School, and the Norton Museum of Art was to engage students and expose them to the visual arts while helping them gain practical experience in a dynamic non-profit business environment. The eight-week program encouraged students to investigate the process of developing an exhibition from the creation of a work of art to the practical contributions made by all Museum departments. Throughout the course, students gained a working knowledge of many facets of the non-profit business world. They developed creative and team-building skills, and participated in a career study of museums, and non-profit businesses applicable to their professional ambitions. Upon completion, the students were able to reflect upon their hard work in this effort and fully appreciate the work that goes on behind-the-scenes leading to the realization of an exhibition.

A & E and PBS have teamed up to create a 16-part series on education in America and Junior Achievement is the topic for one episode. Junior Achievement has chosen to highlight the Palm Beach County BASE program and their work with the Norton Museum of Art during a segment of the episode.

Junior Achievement Inc. is a not-for-profit organization financed by businesses, foundations, and individuals. The purpose of Junior Achievement is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business, and economics to improve the quality of their lives. Since its foundation in 1919, Junior Achievement has contributed to the business and economic education of young people in the United States and throughout the world. JA BASE is designed to help students understand the business aspects of the sports and entertainment industries.

This exhibition is organized by the Norton Museum of Art, William T. Dwyer High School, and the Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches Building Achievement through Sports and Entertainment project. This project is generously funded in part through a grant from the Lost Tree Village Charitable Foundation.
