Mostly Prague: Photographs by Anna Tomczak
11/21/1998 - 1/24/1999

ANNA TOMCZAK is a gifted photographer with an eye for creative staging. Tomczak works with found objects (botanicals, memorabilia and artifacts) as well as the human figure to create evocative assemblages, which, in the best way, evoke the work of Joseph Cornell. A major difference between Cornell and Tomczak is that, with Cornell, the box is the main event; with Tomczak, the photograph is a record of the event. There exist in the world only five large-format 20 X 24 Polaraid view cameras. Tomczak is one of only a handful of artists (William Wegman is another) who is allowed access to rare camera, as well as materials, through Polaroid's artistic support program. Tomczak traveled to Prague specifically to use the camera located there. The core of this exhibition is the result of that trip. While in Prague, Tomczak invited friends to send her letters as well as objects that had special meaning for them, which she then incorporated into her photographs. Tomczak's working process is to first stage the photograph utilizing both two and three-dimensional objects and then, after a long exposure, she transfers the film directly on to 30 X 22 inch watercolor paper, which absorbs and retains the dyes. The final result is a one-of-a-kind print that is luminous and mysterious. This exhibition is organized by the Norton Museum of Art.
