Arts

THE NORTON MUSEUM OF ART opens a new exhibition entitled Art in the Age
of Queen Victoria: Treasures from the Royal Academy of Arts on January
15, 2000. Featuring more than 70 paintings and 12 sculptures from
England's world-renowned Royal Academy of Arts in London, the exhibition
is organized and circulated by The Royal Academy of Arts, London. It is
supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and
Humanities. The local presentation of this exhibition is generously

In the art world of Victorian England, 1837-1901, the Royal Academy of
Arts was a dominant force. Founded in 1768 by an act of King George III,
its first President was Sir Joshua Reynolds, the most important painter
of his day. Reynolds set the tone when he described the Academy in his
Discourse as a body, which, "besides furnishing able men to direct the
student," would form "a repository for the great examples of the Art."
The American, Benjamin West, was another founding member; a Philadelphia
Art in the Age of Queen Victoria: Treasures from the Royal Academy of
Arts Norton Museum of Art painter who became the Academy's second
President.
Today, the Royal Academy of Arts has become an international
institution, offering viewers and exhibitors one of the world's most
distinctive art collections and some of the most beautiful gallery space
in all of Europe. In addition, the Academy initiates and participates in
a wide range of important loan exhibitions.
Art in the Age of Queen Victoria: Treasures from the Royal Academy of
Arts consists of major and lesser-known works by Royal Academicians.
These include works by Landseer, Frith, Herkomer, Watts, Poynter and
Lord Leighton. Lesser-known treasures include Millais' stunning A
Souvenir of Velazquez, Alma-Tadema's A Family Group, and A Mermaid, by
John William Waterhouse RA. Modern and historical genre paintings,
classical and mythological subjects, landscapes, seascapes, and the
exotic are included. Each of the five Presidents who shaped the era are
represented by their portrait. Notable, the exhibition also contains a
painting by Charles West Cope RA, of the selection committee choosing
works for the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition of 1876.
The works in the exhibition were selected by MaryAnne Stevens, Chief
Curator and Education Secretary, and Helen Valentine, Curator of
Painting and Sculpture, Royal Academy of Arts; with Dr. Malcolm Warner,
Curator, The Yale Center for British Art, Art in the Age of Queen
Victoria: Treasures from the Royal Academy of Arts Norton Museum of Art
