California as Muse: The Art of Arthur & Lucia Mathews
October 6 – December 9, 2007

Organized by the Oakland Museum of California, this exhibition presents a major retrospective of the signature artworks, furniture and decorative objects by two of California’s most important twentieth-century artists. Californians at the turn of the twentieth-century celebrated a classical revival in art and cultural pursuits that compared their state to the Arcadian models of ancient Greece and Rome. Artists Arthur and Lucia Mathews devoted their careers to this concept and in doing so created the California Decorative Style. Theirs was a body of fine and decorative art that combined idealized images with embellishments inspired by nature. California as Muse features over 60 examples of the Mathews’ light-filled landscapes, graceful figures and intricately carved furniture and decorative objects, while the accompanying catalogue chronicles over 250 such creations.

Organized by the Oakland Museum of California.

The Oakland Museum of California acknowledges the following contributors: The Oakland Museum Women’s Board; The Brayton Wilbur Foundation; the Art Guild of the Oakland Museum of California; The National Endowment for the Arts; Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Holloway; and Nancy Stryble, in memory of Francis and Margaret Stryble.

Medieval and Renaissance Treasures from the V&A

October 24, 2007 – January 6, 2008

Organized by the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, this exhibition will feature medieval and Renaissance treasures ranging in date from the late Roman Empire to about 1600. These works were originally intended for the embellishment of the church and chapel in the Middle Ages, and for the cabinet of wealthy Renaissance collectors. Even then, these precious works were highly prized for their beauty, the value of their materials and for their exquisite workmanship. Included are 44 superb works in various media—ivory, wood, bronze, metalwork, stained glass, and manuscripts—among them unique masterpieces such as the ivory cover of the Lorsch Gospels (commissioned by Charlemagne), the Limoges-enamel reliquary made to house the relics of Thomas Becket, a bronze fountainhead in the form of a winged putto, by Donatello, and an illustrated sketchbook by Leonardo da Vinci known as the Forster Codex III.

Organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

This exhibition is made possible in part through the generosity of Dame Celia Lipton Farris, Laurence Levine Charitable Fund and Sir Thomas R. Moore.

Media Support provided by The Palm Beach Post and WPTV NewsChannel 5.
