  • ArtSpeaks Lecture / Grand Gifts: The Significance of Lacquer Screens in China

    Jan Stuart, the Melvin R. Seiden Curator of Chinese Art, National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, discusses grand, polychrome lacquer screens, including one example in the Norton’s Collection, that were presented to distinguished Chinese gentlemen on important occasions, such as an advanced birthday (often ceremonially celebrated at the Lunar New Year). Often known in Western countries as Coromandel Screens, or as Kuancai Screens in Chinese, they were not usually made for export, but rather were so admired overseas from the 17th century on that they reached foreign shores.

    Director: Dr. Haiqiong Deng

    Dancing Dragon in Colorful Clouds: Chinese Folk and Traditional Music

    The FSU Chinese Music Ensemble will present a unique concert titled Dancing Dragon in Colorful Clouds: Chinese Folk and Traditional Music. This performance will showcase the rich diversity of Chinese folk and traditional music, featuring a variety of Chinese musical instruments and an array of repertoires spanning different regions and historical eras. Audience members will experience the beauty and vitality of Chinese musical traditions, brought to life by talented students under the direction of Dr. Haiqiong Deng. Join us for an immersive journey through the landscapes of Chinese music, culture, and heritage.
