Imprinting an object on a flat surface is the simplest way to transfer an image and constitutes the essence of printmaking. Contemporary artists have continued to work with new concepts in printmaking. Artists have often been attracted to the special effects created by imprinting. In the late 1980s, using heat, ink, and irons as stamping devices, Willie Cole began creating elaborate compositions from repeated printed forms. Cole’s iron scorches have added a symbolic and spiritual voice to this tradition of artist imprints.
