Host Wayne “Mister Trombone” Perry

Bring family and friends to the Juneteenth Summer Festival and commemorate the day the announcement of the abolition of slavery was made in Texas in 1865. 

Hosted by MC Wayne “Mister Trombone” Perry, this event celebrates freedom and spotlights the African American experience with live musical performances, tours, African Dance and Drum workshops, storytelling sessions by the Literacy Coalition, and a creative community art project using African print textiles led by fiber mixed media artist, Gillian Kennedy Wright.

This festival is free with museum admission. Museum admission is free for residents of Palm Beach County.

    Mister Trombone kicks off the event and provides entertainment throughout the day at the Norton’s historic 1941 East Entrance.

  • Live Art in the Garden

    Two Florida artists create and share their work in the garden. Anthony Burks Sr. of A.T.B. Fine Artists & Designers shares completed works and live paints a new work of art. Cynthia Simmons of Belle’s Collections creates African inspired jewelry.

  • Garden Sculpture Tour

    Explore sculptures in the Garden with Museum docents during this 30-minute tour. Enjoy an introduction to varied modern and contemporary sculptures, as well as aspects of the Foster + Partners expansion and the 1941 façade.

  • Dancing the Rhythm: African Dance and Drumming

    In Partnership with The Natural Movers Foundation and Livin the Rhythm

    Come join us as we dance to the rhythmic vibration of the drum. This session will include both an Umfundalai (African) dance workshop led by Ericka Squire and a rhythmic drumming workshop led by Abasi Hanif. All ages are welcome.

    Suggested attire: a lapa (a piece of fabric that can be worn around the waist) or shakatoes (loosely fitted pants)

  • Hands on Art Activities

    Mixed Media Fiber Artist, Gillian Kennedy Wright invites you to create functional art! Make an Ankara fabric tassel and turn it into a bracelet, bookmark, necklace, bag, or belt tassel.

    Artist Jill Lavetsky leads a workshop exploring Adinkra symbols and meanings and make stamps and create your own prints.

  • Storytelling Sessions presented by the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County

    Learn the inspiring story of determination and perseverance reflective of the African American Experience. Presented by the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County, whose mission is to improve the quality of life in our community by promoting and achieving literacy with the goal that every child and adult in our county becomes a reader.
