Art of the Word: Calligraphy and Chinese Artists
Monochrome ink works by Wu Chang-shuo (1844 – 1927) and Lee Chun-yi (born 1965) are based on ancient Chinese epigraphy. Wu takes up a brush painting great seal script characters on one side of fan which were initially carved into one of 10 boulders forming a group of the oldest surviving Chinese stone inscriptions. Lee creates a panoramic view of Jade Mountain in Taiwan by repeatedly dab-printing 260 standard script characters comprising the complete text Heart Sutra to achieve what he calls "the unity of calligraphy and painting."
