Reflecting the Gaze: Jillian Mayer and Abigail Reyes
Reflecting the Gaze features video works by two contemporary female-identifying artists, Jillian Mayer and Abigail Reyes. The videos on view present a revision of culture, from telenovelas to the story of Venus de Milo, with the two artists redirecting the typically male-oriented, societal gaze on the women’s place in history. The artists repossess their agency by taking back the otherwise defenseless perspective of how women "should" or are "meant to" behave and be viewed. Mayer and Reyes provide alternative vantage points to these stereotypes in thoughtful, and humorous, forms. A selection of works by female- and nonbinary-identifying artists from the Norton Museum of Art’s Collection thematically converse with the videos to complete the exhibition.
