International Spanish Academies (ISA)
The Palm Beach County School District includes schools designated as International Spanish Academies by Spain’s Ministry of Education. These schools have an intensive dual-language program focused on the history, culture and language of the Spanish-speaking world.
Norton is a proud partner of five International Spanish Academies schools in Palm Beach County, including Berkshire Elementary School, Greenacres Elementary School, New Horizons Elementary School, Okeeheelee Middle School, and John I. Leonard High School. The Museum plays a significant role in the schools’ cultural curriculum for 3rd - 12th grades.
This partnership encourages conversations around Hispanic and Latin American art and allows students to explore themes of heritage and identity. The program’s initiatives include:
-
Lesson plans based on visual literacy and the Norton’s Collection
-
Stories in Art tours
-
ISA Family Day at the Museum, featuring a student art exhibition, performances, and celebrations of the students’ accomplishments,
-
Opportunities for teachers’ professional development.
In collaboration with John I. Leonard High School teachers and administrators, the Norton Museum of Art invites International Spanish Academy students in 11th and 12th grades to participate in the Guía Program every fall. During an 8-week humanities class at school (conducted in English and Spanish) students learn all about teaching from works of art. Then students can work at the museum, leading conversations with visitors in Spanish and English about certain art pieces in the Galleries. This paid opportunity allows students to gain public speaking skills and awareness of working in a professional setting.
