Arts and Literacy Partnership for 2nd Graders
The Arts and Literacy Partnership for 2nd Graders uses the visual arts to enrich literacy and language skills among 2nd grade students from School District of Palm Beach County elementary schools.
Arts integration in the classroom can help students strengthen literacy skills by engaging critical thinking, art related vocabulary and reviewing important curriculum standards, such as learning elements of a story. Schools' participation in this partnership directly aligns with the Benchmark Literacy Unit 6, in which readers build knowledge and understanding around folktales from diverse cultures and traditions. In this partnership, Art teachers and 2nd grade teachers collaborate into writing lesson plans that integrate Art into their curriculum.
During the school year, all second-grade classes from partner schools visit the Museum for a Stories in Art tour and participate in a hands-on workshop. The Norton collaborates with the Arts and Literacy departments at the Palm Beach County School District to utilize literacy learning techniques and connect to standards. The program culminates in a final art lesson for all second graders, led by their art teachers at their schools, that reflects upon students’ experiences at the Museum.
